Activities on Maui in January
Are you looking for activities? You have come to the right place! There are plenty of activities on Maui in January. First, the annual humpback whale watching season is in full swing off the shores of our beautiful Ma’alaea Surf Resort. Officially, the peak whale watching months are January, February and March. Want to see a whale? You should try a whale watching cruise. These cruises are the most popular way to view these wonderful creatures. For the more adventurous, try a kayaking excursion. Kayaking is another great way to see these magnificent creatures. Finally, the views from our Kihei oceanfront and beachfront condo’s in Maui aren’t bad either!

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Jan 1 – Jan 15
Thursday, Jan 3rd – Straight No Chaser is a no nonsense male a cappella group made up of 10 male voices. They have a massive fan base and multiple national television appearances. They have several successful CD releases as well. If you like a cappella you shouldn’t miss this one!
Friday, Jan 4th – An Evening with Judy Collins: Blue Bear Hawaii presents singer/songwriter Judy Collins on tour in support of her latest release “Strangers Again”. This award winning musician is known for her original compositions and imaginative interpretations of many contemporary folk standards. Her career spans five decades and she has amassed a 50 album body of work.
Saturday, Jan 5th – Willie K & Friends BluesFest: Enjoy Hawaii’s living legend, Willie K and his Warehouse Blues Band. They will host guest artists Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Tavana, John Akapo and more. This should be a great evening of blues and rock.
Friday, Jan 11th – Smallfoot: Stary Night Cinema will present this wonderful animated movie. Who doesn’t love an animated movie? They are perfect for the whole family. To get the best seats please come early and bring your blanket or a low-back beach chair and stake out a patch of lawn. If you do, you can enjoy live musical entertainment before the show. And don’t worry, if it should rain, the movie will be moved indoors to the Castle Theater.
Jan 16 – Jan 31
Thursday, Jan 31st – Derek Gripper: Listen to this amazing classical guitarist from South Africa. His music is eclectic and crosses many styles of music. It will be a special night not soon forgotten.
Additional Activities
Another activity on Maui in January include the 2018 Sentry Tournament of Champions. Our golf junkies will enjoy this event. It will be played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua. This tournament is scheduled to run from January 3-7. It features professional golf’s top ranked professionals.
Joggers, grab your jogging shoes! On January 14th, The Maui Oceanfront Marathon kicks off. Along with the marathon event there are additional distances including a half marathon, 15k, 10k,and 5k. The marathon course begins in Wailea and ends in Lahaina. I’m tired just writing about it!

Friday
You like to party, right?! On Maui, if it’s Friday, there is a party somewhere! Every Friday, there’s a town party sponsored by Maui County. The party rotates to a different town each Friday evening. These events are great fun for both visitors and residents alike. They feature local food, entertainment, live music and shopping from local vendors.
First Friday – Wailuku Town Party (Central Maui)
Second Friday – Lahaina Town Party (West Maui)
Third Friday – Makawao Town Party (Upcountry)
Fourth Friday – Kihei Town Party (South Maui)

Saturday
Do you like to shop? Shoppers should definitely check out the Maui Swap Meet located in Kahului at the UH Maui College. This activity is free. Also, it has over 200 vendors. The Maui Swap Meet features handmade crafts, jewelry, artwork and much more. Because of this variety you will definitely enjoy your shopping therapy.

Weather in January
Are you looking to get away from your harsh winter weather? Than Maui is the perfect place for you! Our famous Hawaiian trade winds are typically lighter during the months of January through April. Rain showers can be more common during January. The Kihei area, home of the Maalaea Surf Resort, is typically sunny and warm however. Our daytime temperatures range from the low 60’s in the evenings to the mid-80’s during the day. If you are planning a trip to the Haleakala Crater be sure to bring layers of warmer clothing. At the 10,000 foot level the summit temperatures can drop below freezing.
