About Us
The five-acre beachfront that the Maalaea Surf Resort enjoys was originally owned by the Dole Pineapple Company. It was also used by Philippine fishermen. These fishermen set up their small fishing villages along the five-mile stretch of the Sugar Beach shoreline along Ma’alaea Bay. Back in the 1970’s the Dole Company sold a five-acre parcel of their land to an Oregon State developer. One of our current owner’s father was the architect on the development project. He was instrumental in creating the stunning Polynesian inspired buildings and lush tropical grounds that make up our incomparable Ma’alaea Surf Resort today.
For many years there remained a fishing village just up the beach from our Sugar Beach location. In those days, in the early mornings, our guests could often be found wading into the water of our white sand beach, nets in hand, helping the fisherman pull in their catch of the day.
Since the beginning the Maalaea Surf Resort was designed not only for our owner’s personal use, but also with the idea that our owners could share their island paradise with our guests. The Ma’alaea Surf Resort Rental Association was created from the beginning with this goal in mind. While much has changed around us, we are proud of our beginnings and our truly unique “low density” beach vacation condo experience. This experience was created long ago and continues to be lovingly nurtured to this day. If you are looking for the best Sugar Beach condo, or beachfront resort along Ma’alaea Bay, look no further. Ma’alaea Surf Resorts is simply the best choice in the Kihei, Maui area.
